Does the scooter have a 17 digit VIN number? This tells you if you
can get a title and if the scooter is legal for sale in the United States.
Many Chinese disposable scooters do not have a VIN or DOT approval.
They are unsafe, unreliable, and in many cases cannot be repaired. Demand
to see the Certificate of Origin and national dealer network before
you buy.
Is the scooter covered by a full warranty which covers parts and labor?
Most cheap disposable scooters have a limited warranty for parts only
and usually lasts less than 6 months. A quality scooter will have a
full "bumper to bumper" warranty of six months or more.
How much weight will the scooter carry? Look at the GVWR (Gross Vehicle
Weight Rating), which is on the Certificate of Origin or stamped onto
the frame. If you don't see it, don't buy it. Disposables usually don't
have it.
Is the scooter a name brand with a dealer network? Beware of the no-name
Chinese imitations. No dealer network = No parts. No parts = No resale.
Is the scooter listed in the Kelly Blue Book or NADA pricing guides?
If not, it's disposable - NO RESALE VALUE!
Is the scooter painted with high gloss finishes or is it just injection
molded in color?
Does the scooter have disc brakes or drum brakes? Disc brakes are found
on better quality scooters.
Does the scooter have steel wheels or aluminum? Aluminum reduces unsprung
weight and is better.
Are accessories available for the scooter, like windshields, luggage
racks, cargo boxes, and performance kits?
Does the scooter use high quality branded components, or just enough
to get your money?
Is the seller in the business of servicing motorcycles and scooters,
or just a wholesaler or retailer jumping on the scooter bandwagon?
Who will be there after the sale to take care of your scooter?
Can the seller offer satisfied customer referrals?
Does the seller offer free lay-a-way and free local delivery?
How long has the scooter manufacturer been in business?
Does the dealer have an "On-Site" shop with qualified technicians
to service your scooter after the sale?
Does the dealer stock repair parts and maintenance items for your scooter?
